The General Directorate for Development
Cooperation (D.G.C.S.) of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs started a
supporting programme for the Egypt Environmental Affairs Agency – Technical
Co-operation Office for the Environment in the scope of the environmental
programme of application of the NEAP which, for the part concerning the
safeguarding of the cultural heritage, has the SCA (Supreme Council for
Antiquities) as its operative counterpart.
The Department of Historical Sciences of the
Ancient World of the University of Pisa took up the scientific direction of
this programme.
The project, named “Enhancement of the
Organisation and Capabilities to Preserve Cultural Heritage Assets of Egypt”,
has the following aims:
-
creation of an
information model as a support to the analysis and for the proposals of the
minimization of the environmental degradation which is impoverishing
Egyptian archaeological sites;
-
aids to SCA to
improve the archaeological sites’ management;
-
creation of an
integrated system of support and
development of
Egyptian civil service for the prevention of environmental risks and for the
socio-economic development of the country’s cultural resources.
The site chosen by SCA is the Northern sector
of the Saqqara Necropolis, particularly suitable for the planning and
the experimentation of the intervention model due to its wideness, number of
visitors, condition and environmental problems. |
