 North Saqqara Risk Map

The project’s environmental component analyzed the pressures which Saqqara is bearing because of the urban, industrial and tourist aggressions, and identified the critical parameters, the disturbance elements and the indicators of the area’s vulnerability.

Analyses were made about: damages caused by the area’s accessibility, degradation due to the use of internal spaces, degradation due to lack of safeguard and upkeep interventions, sources of atmospheric pollution and of disturbance to the geological balance.

As said before, the statistical method was adopted to analyzed the degradation factors attacking the necropolis, and 13 structures were analyzed in detail; in three of them fixed posts were installed to monitor environmental conditions (Ptahhotep’s and Ty’s mastabas and Unas’ pyramid).

The system, powered by solar panels, is made up of sensors connected to a power station, and allows to take, at short intervals, externally, the relative humidity, the temperature, the wind’s speed and direction, the atmospheric pressure; while the air flux, the relative humidity and the temperature are taken internally. Then the data, stored in the database, are correlated.

The monitoring equipment is completed with two portable carbon dioxide meters.
