The short time available (less than two years), and the impossibility to visit every structure, convinced us of the necessity to use statistical techniques, together with a first survey during which a first assessment about the monuments’ conditions (good, bad, fair, poor).

Then, starting from the identification and detailed examination of 13 structures, considered as characteristic for their position, architectural typology, anthropic and environmental pressure, the standards for the collection of data have been established, in such a way that they could make up the 13 structures’ detailed analysis on the one hand, and that they could be statistically extrapolated on the entirety of the structures of the necropolis on the other. Obviously, the wider the statistical sample is, the more reliable the data will be; besides, the risk map’s open system permits to widen the sample without having to input the data again.

The collected data of the 13 structures concern: the external ventilation, the structure’s condition, the past restorations. Inside the structures, upon the most significant walls, the data concern: the walls' detailed description, the structure’s condition, the paintings’ condition, archives of ancient and recent photos which can, when compared, give information about the degradation rate, photographic archives about the degradation factors, drawings’ archives.

Relevant thematic maps about the characteristic walls conditions were drawn up; they are supported by photo-mosaics.
