The
historical cartographies were
digitalised,
geo-referred and inserted in the cartographical system in order to
connect the cartography to the databases developed by the other
project’s sectors. Using this technique, it was also possible to
indirectly achieve the geo-reference of elements no longer visible
on the ground. Naturally, their topographical precision depends on
the accuracy of the ancient map. |

The
archaeological cartography used as a reference in the successive
studies was the one drawn up by Smith in 1936 and updated by Spencer in
1974: to facilitate its transposition in the basic cartography it was
subdivided in geo-reference sectors. To better correlate the plants with
the territory, the photo-mosaic
of the aerial geo-referred photos was also used, using
photo-interpretation techniques.
Once the
geo-reference of Smith and Spencer’s cartography was carried out, it was
integrated with data from the recent excavations and with studies executed
on known areas by successive excavations. |
